무지에 관하여(About Ignorance)

알지 못하는 데 기쁘다는 말은

매우 역설적(paradoxical)인 표현인 것 같다.

“A Book of English Essays”에서

Robert Lynd의 수필

“The Pleasure of Ignorance”를 읽어 보면

그 ‘역설 적인’ 것이

이해가 되기도 한 것 같다.

“One of the greatest joys known to man

is to take such a flight into ignorance

in search of knowledge.

The great pleasure of ignorance is, after all,

the pleasure of asking questions.

The man who has lost this pleasure or

exchanged it for the pleasure of dogma,

which is the pleasure of answering,

is already beginning to stiffen.

(사람이 알고 있는 가장 큰 기쁨 중의 하나가 지식을 찾아서

무지 속으로 날아 들어가는 것이다. 무지의 큰 즐거움은 결국

질문하는 즐거움이다. 이 기쁨을 상실했거나 혹은

대답하는 즐거움인 도그마의 즐거움과 교환한 사람은

이미 경직되기 시작하고 있는 것이다)

모르는 것을 아는 사실이

어쩌면 ‘무지(ignorance)’하지 않는 ‘지혜로운(wise)’

말이 되기도 한 것 같다

We forget that Socrates was famed

for wisdom not because he ws

omniscient but because he realized

at the age of seventy that he still

know nothing.

(우리는 소크라테스가 모든 것을 다 알아서가 아니라

그가 70살이 되어서도 여전히 아무것도 모른다는 사실을

깨달았기 때문에 지혜로 유명했다는 것을 잊고 있다)
